5. Matt Forte is often forgotten in the conversation of the NFL’s best backs but Forte is fantastic on third downs and he is a real force to be reckoned with. He is a big a very strong running back and can pick up lots of extra yards while being tackled. Forte is also very productive as a receiver and has moderate speed but can get past the defenders in bursts.

4. Power, toughness and vision has made Marshawn Lynch into an elite running back in the NFL. He also seems to be getting better and better with age and experience. Lynch is the best pure power running back in the NFL. Lynch has some speed but his power and ability to run after contact gets him past defenders. He is also a solid receiver and is an all-around athlete.

3. Jamaal Charles is as dynamic and dangerous as any running back in the NFL. He is the the biggest guy but with his burst and lower-body power, he’ll hit a defender and bounce off to continue picking up yardage. may be the NFL’s fastest running back and if he gets loose there are no defenders who will catch him from behind. He is also a very talented receiver and when he is on he is the teams best receiver.

2. Lesean McCoy was  the most productive running back in the NFL this season. Although he is not the biggest running back McCoy consistently causes defenders to miss tackles—and even breaks tackles—thanks to his lower-body power and his agility in space. He seems to be able to see the whole field and he has great speed and acceleration. He is also often used in the passing game and is very effective.

1. Adrian Peterson did not have his most productive season but he was also with one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. Based on talent alone he is still the best running back. He is one of the most powerful players in the NFL and has the natural gifts to beat any defender.He’s fast enough to pull away from defenders in space and is able to  break away for big runs and run past defenders. In the receiving game, he is effective catching and running out of the backfield, Peterson can be a threat on dumpoffs and in the screen games but is less effective in the slot.
